The Ice House

no The ice house was an 18th century attempt at refrigeration. It was used to keep meat and other perishables fresh for a longer period of time. The roof of this structure was shaped like an inverted cone. In the winter months, a pit in the house was filled with ice and covered with straw. During the warmer months, the north-facing door was never opened in the heat of day. Instead, it was opened either before dawn or after dark.
