The Prudent

no

A second larger wreck, quite possibly the Prudent, is located across the harbour near the Careening Point. It's scant remains are limited to the bottom of the hull, which is covered with ballast rock and concreted masses of cannonballs and bar shot.

noStructural remains are more prevalent than on the Célèbre. Most impressive are the large floor timbers, spreading out over the harbour bottom and disappearing beneath a beach-stone cover. Few of its 74 cannons remain, most having been salvaged in 1758. Those cannons that are found tend to be fragmented, evidence of the explosion of cannons in the extream heat of the shipboard fire.

One of the most interesting features of this wreck is the mast step/shot locker area. A large mound of concreted cannonballs surrounds an open cavity where the main mast once stood. The cavity still contains remains of the burned-out mast.

The once-proud Prudent now lies in less than 5 metres of water. Close to the harbour entrance, the site is particularly exposed to the sea and can only be visited on relatively calm days.
