Louis Morand came to the Okanagan in 1882 and made friends with the French-Candian settlers in White Valley very fast. On July 27th, 1885, Morand and his partner Quinn Faulkner, took up land (lot 183) some of which today is the Catt Ranch. On February 22nd, 1887, the land was abandoned although Faulkner still lived there. The same day it was filed for again but only by Faulkner. At this time Morand was contracting with Fred Barnes in Vernon.

Morand was married to Salome Quesnel on April 4th,1888, at Louis Christien's house. Later that year, Louis bought 40 acres of land from Faulkner. Together the two men laid out a town site. The first time it was called Lumby was August 25th, 1892. In 1892 Faulkner received a permit to build a 40x40 foot two story building. The contractors were Morand and Barnes. The name was to be the "Ramshorn". The Morands moved in some time in early December. The total cost was $7,500. In 1902 Morand sold the Ramshorn to T. A. Norris. Almost immediately he built a new building beside it called the "Morand", It was more of a boardhouse than a hotel.

The Morands had 6 children, Blanche, Rose, Clara, Richard, Wilfred and Irene. When the telephone company brought a phone line to Lumby in 1912, the switchboard was placed in the Morand Hotel. Irene and Clara ran the Switchboard.

Louis passed away after a lingering illness in 1916 and is buried in the Lumby Cemetery. Salome went on to marry A. Sideleau. They moved to Victoria where Mr. Sideleau passed away. Salome then moved back to Lumby where she passed away in 1939.
