A celebrated local adventurer, Guzzwell emigrated from Britain and settled in British Columbia. At an early age he accompanied his parents on a trip to South Africa and this early experience on board a 15.8m ketch helped prepare him for the voyage for which he is now famous.
In 1955, Guzzwell left Victoria on the Trekka, his hand built 6.1m yawl, and sailed alone to Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Mauritius, Durban, the Panama Canal, Hawaii and back to Victoria. At that time the Trekka was the smallest to have sailed around the world. The Trekka is on display at the Maritime Museum of British Columbia. Guzzwell wrote about his experience on board the Trekka in 'Trekka around the World'. He later sought out new adventure on board the Tzu Hang and the Treasure.
