"You ask me about the salmon. Strange to say it was near the end of July before they began to come into these south shore rivers in many numbers. I only got 45 to my own rod but I would be quite ashamed to say how many I hooked and lost this season. I lost them in all kinds of exciting ways - a great many cut the casts going down the rapids and getting caught round rocks with sharp edges but at least I saved my record fish, a perfect beauty of 43 lbs. When the season closed on Aug 15th the river was too high for many of the pools and the fish were still coming in. There are a great many left in the river. We go back to town in a few days much to my regret." Elsie Reford to Lord Grey, September 10th, 1912 |
