Order of CanadaThe Order of Canada is considered the centrepiece of Canada's system of honours to living Canadians who exemplify the highest qualities of citizenship and contribute to the lives of their contemporaries. The Order has three levels: Companion, Officer and Member. Members are recognized for demonstrating outstanding service to their country within Canada. The Sovereign Head of the Order is the Queen, and the Governor General of Canada is Chancellor and Principal Companion. Appointments are recommended by an Advisory Council chaired by the Chief Justice of Canada. Fewer than one-hundred citizens receive the distinction of being inducted as Members in any one year.

The medal is inscribed with the Latin motto DESIDERANTES MELIOREM PATRIAM which means "They desire a better country."
