In the 19th century, Granite Bay served as a base for one of the largest logging operations in the district. The Hastings Company pioneered railway logging in B.C. at their Granite Bay operation, using an old steam engine retired from Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) construction. At peak operations in the 1890s, the Hastings outfit employed up to 200 hundred men. A small settlement sprang up around their beach camp and log dump, including a store/post office, school, hotel, brothel, and a government dock where the Union Steamships called to deliver passengers, mail, and supplies. About six ranches were established along the company’s mainline. |
Lucky Jim Mine The Lucky Jim Mine was located on Quadra Island three miles from Granite Bay. It opened in 1903 and for a time yielded tons of gold and copper ore. The Hastings Company, formed a secondary company to extract gold and other metals from the Lucky Jim, a promising ore body discovered in their Granite Bay workings. The mine was very profitable but business quickly petered out. The 1925 Great Fire on Quadra Island destroyed most of the Lucky Jim mining camp, and damaged the machinery left on site. An attempt to revive activity at the mine proved unsuccessful.
