History - Pisiquit (con't)

One mark left by the British, still partly visible to this day at Windsor, is Fort Edward, which was headed by captain Alexander Murray. The purpose of its construction in 1750 was to survey the Acadians, as well as to control the passage of ships going to the Bay of Fundy. It was at this fort that on September 5th 1755, the Acadians were instructed to gather and

were then told the terrible events that would lead to their deportation. On October 13th 1755, 1066 people from Pisiguit were boarded on four ships: the Neptune, the Three Friends, the Dolphin, and the Ranger, yet they only left Minas Basin Monday, October 20th. Following this tragedy, the English burned the houses of Pisiguit to insure that those who managed to escape would have nowhere to return.

One hundred fifty-six former inhabitants of Pisiguit arrived at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on November 19th 1755, and more arrived in December (although, Philadelphia was obviously not the only place of disembarkation). Interestingly, most among the first Acadians to arrive in Louisiana were from Pisiguit and Beaubassin.

The Acadians never received permission to rebuild their village, however, as we are well aware, some began new lives in different parts of the Maritimes.
