CALMING THE STORM ON THE SEA OF GALILEE

This scene illustrates the passage from the Gospel according to Matthew:

"Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed Him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke Him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!" He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm."
(Matt. VIII: 23-27)

In the window the stormy seas threaten Jesus and the disciples, who are tossed around in a small boat. Nincheri creates a dynamic composition by emphasising the movement of the crashing waves, the straining sails and fearful disciples. Christ, standing in the boat with His back to the viewer and his hand raised to appease the storm, acts as a stable element in the composition. Nincheri also uses light and colour to compliment the symbolism of the story.
