THE TRIBUTE MONEY

This scene illustrates the Gospel according to Saint Luke where Jesus is questioned by the Scribes and High Priests on the obligation to pay taxes to Caesar (Luke XX:25). In an illustration of the famous phrase "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and render unto God that which is His" Christ is shown standing on a dais, gazing to heaven and holding a coin stamped with the effigy of Caesar. Behind him is St. Peter, the fisherman. An angel holding the scales of justice floats above the scene.

Again Nincheri creates the illusion of depth by guiding the viewer's gaze through the archways that frame the scene. A broken arch behind the central figures attracts attention to a village in the background while adding a dynamic element to the symmetry of the composition.Nincheri also made brilliant use of the contrasting colours and qualities of glass to emphasize this sense of depth.

The frescoes of Saint-Léon are described in the Fresco section of this website.
