CHRIST ENTERING JERUSALEM

This window's rich and complex composition portrays Christ entering the gates of Jerusalem. In the foreground, Christ, astride a mule, moves through the city gates surrounded by a crowd of followers. Here Nincheri has created a dynamic composition in which Christ seems to be advancing towards the viewer in a symbolic transition from the private to the public world. The scene then guides viewer's gaze to the background which is framed by an archway through which can be seen a path leading out to a bucolic landscape.

Nincheri's understanding of the conventions of the stained-glass medium is obvious in this composition. He balances the dynamic elements of the scene, Christ advancing through the turbulent crowd, with stable architectural elements such as the city gates, which invite the viewer into the composition.

The frescoes of Saint-Léon are described in the Fresco section of this website.
