The Royal Bank in Fort St. John

Picture of Royal Bank

1930 - Not very big but very important in the growing community, the Royal Bank was situated on the north side of 1 00th Avenue in Fort St. John. The Royal Bank first opened in Fort St. John on March 30, 1929 in a small room at the back of Finch's new store but shortly moved into its own building. Officials of the Royal Bank drove through the night to beat the Canadian Bank of Commerce which had been about to move in, then the Crash of '29 and the Depression struck. The Canadian Bank of Commerce did not move in until 1942 to handle the US Army payroll during the construction of the Alaska Highway.
