The Nucleus of Fort St. John

Fur Centre of the North

Fort St. John in 1906 on the north side of the Peace River. Buildings left to right are the Hudson's Bay Company Store, factor Beaton's home, Hudson's Bay Company Office and the storehouse. The Revillon Frères Store was located closer to the hills in the distance and are blocked from this view by the Hudson's Bay office and the storehouse. The fur press in the foreground of the Hudson's Bay Store was used to bale furs into compact and manageable bundles for transport.
