The Oilfield Population Explosion
Aerial view of Fort St. John in 1959. Gone are the US Army camps but in
their stead are the homes that were built in no time to accommodate the influx of
oilpatch workers and their families. Entire housing subdivisions were completed in
minimal time. Pacific Petroleum built apartments and homes which still stand today. It
is said that in doing landscaping of these new homes, slugs were inadvertently
introduced to Fort St. John in the sod laid down for lawns. The old-timers don't ever
recall having problems with these critters until Pacific Pete decided that grass from
seed took too long to grow!
