Collapsed Peace River Bridge

Collapsed Peace River Bridge

Constructed in 1942, the mighty Peace River Bridge at Taylor collapsed in October 1957. Unknowingly, the foundations of the bridge were built on unstable soil. Ground water eroded away the banks and regular maintenance was necessary. The north end of the bridge shifted early one morning opening a gap on the bridge deck, giving advance warning that failure was imminent. Traffic was blocked off and everyone waited for the big event. Approximately ten hours later, the one end of the bridge came down in a tangled mass of concrete and cable. Many a camera crew were on hand to record the event for posterity.
