The Steamship D.A. Thomas, Grounded

The Steamship D.A. Thomas, grounded for the winter
The steamship D.A. Thomas spent the winter of 1929-1930 frozen in the Peace River at the Old Fort Landing after running aground on a sandbar in July 1929. Residents had to tend to the ferry on a regular basis and chop the ice all the way around so that it would not be crushed as the river surface continued to freeze. She was not freed until May 1930 during high water. The subsequent trip down river to Fort Vermilion would be her last.
