Sophie Brandt was born in Sweetgrass, Manitoba on August 3, 1912, of Ukranian and Romanian descent. At the age of fourteen she came to Grande Prairie, Alberta to work. It was here she was to meet her future husband Charlie.

In 1954 Sophie come to Fort St. John to run the B.C. Cafe for Charlie, Four years later in Buffalo Lake, Charlie and Sophie were married on the bride's family farm in a wedding that was to last three days.

Sophie was a modern woman with many diverse hobbies and likes. Not only was she very fashion conscious but she had widely traveled from Turkey to Hong Kong, Australia, Israel, China and Hawaii. She won awards in many fall fairs for her creative handiwork in crochet and cutwork and cooked wonderful dishes of Ukranian or Romanian flavour. She was also very active in many organizations including Pioneers of the Peace, the Social Credit Party and the Council of Women in which she was 'Woman of the Year.'

Sophie is probably best known as a champion beaver skinner. Her husband Charlie was an avid trapper and Sophie was actively involved in his trap lines with him. Her talent in beaver skinning was the envy of many male trappers.
