Becoming a P. Eng

The process of becoming a professional engineer is lengthy and involved, but this ensures that licensed engineers will act responsibly and in the public's interest. The first step in the process is education. Most university engineering programs require four years of study. Engineers must have a solid background in science and math, although they are also required to take complementary courses such as economics and sociology. This diversity aims to create a well-rounded graduate with a "sense of social responsibility".

There is a deep tradition involved in graduating as an engineer. A successful engineering graduate can be picked out from a crowd anywhere in Canada by looking only at their fingers; every licensed engineer wears an iron ring on their left index finger, to denote their status. Originally, the iron from which these rings were made was taken from a bridge which had collapsed. The ring is meant as a reminder to every engineer of their social responsibility.

After graduation, the process of becoming a P.Eng. continues. Professional engineering societies exist in each Canadian province and have three requirements for membership:

  1. You must be 18 years of age
  2. You must be of "good character"
  3. You must have an engineering degree from an accredited school or you must meet additional P.Eng. admittance standards.
Graduates can apply to become Engineers In Training (EIT) while studying under a professional engineer in their workplace. After four years of engineering- related work, you may finally apply to become a professional engineer. This requires that engineers pass a Professional Practice Exam, a 3 hour exam covering the ethics, law, and liability of the engineering profession. Once you have finished these steps, CONGRATULATIONS, you are a now a professional engineer!

Canadian Engineering Schools

Here is a list of universities which offer accredited engineering degrees. Some colleges also offer the first one or two years of an engineering degree, which can be transferred to an accredited university program. Universities offering co-op or internship programs are also indicated. Speaking of which, give these special programs some thought: though co-op and internship may take a little longer to complete, contacts and work experience pay off IMMENSELY when you start looking for a job.
