Steps taken to Implement the Elders Council

  1. List all eligible community members (age 57and older) and inform elders, both on and off reserve, that they are welcome to participate in the Elders' Council.

  2. Set up responsibilities for Council members/volunteer services in the seven areas, areas of language, culture (potlatch, ceremonies, sacred sites, traditional clan system, etc,) history, stewardship, and tribal relationships and inform other Councils of how the responsibilities are being laid out.

  3. Recognize and affirm the elders roles and authorities at a Potlatch in September.

  4. Set up an Administration unit and find resources for position (which will not necessarily be filled by an elder). Ask the Ścwalmicw Centre to assist in finding funds for secretary/coordinator- they have assisted the elders in the past.

  5. Clarify Veto powers and how and when they will be used; areas of use might include burial sites, environmental concerns and others for which elders have expertise.
