Chronology:
1780-1800 The Chinoiserie Period
Period of experiment.
Chinese wares were used for inspiration, copied or adapted, using simple line engraving techniques.
The copper plate often held a great deal of ink, and the prints copied were dark and slightly blurred
1800-1815 The First Transitional Period
Engraving was combined with stipple which made it possible to create more light and shade to print scenes with clouds in the sky
Not possible to date the introduction of stipple
1815-1835 The Vintage Years
Markets opened up in North America, Europe
Dinner services were produced with patterns of such titles as "Antique Scenery", "British Views", "Metropolitan Scenery", and "Picturesque Scenery".
1835-45 The Second Transitional Period
Begins to use colors other than blue: Green Sepia and Mulberry.
1845-1860 The Romantic Period
The copyright act of 1842 prevented the copying of engraving from books, previously
Result was a shift to romantic scenes. Often see a lake, or a river as the central figure, with a mosque, castle or classical building. Also popular are mountains in the distance, with a group of people in the foreground, perhaps with a dog.
