To date an object in your collection it is important to identify some key features of the object itself.
- Manufacturers often stamp, impress, paint, or leave identifying signatures on their work. This can often be found on the base of an object, or somewhere hidden from full view.
- The practise of inscribing a name or symbol of origin of an object is indeed a very old one. The impressed names or 'seals' of makers on Roman red ware are outstanding instances of this practise from Classical times.
- Materials used or the invention of a new technique can also help to identify your piece
