O'Reilly Family Photos
This exhibition, based on the collection of photographs at Point Ellice House, celebrates a remarkable period in the history of Victoria, British Columbia. The O'Reilly family photographs in this website exhibition were taken during the Victorian Period. This period coincides with the influence of British social practices on the City of Victoria. Victoria was a well-established colonial town around the turn of the century, and the O'Reillys represent a family of high social status at the time. Victorian social pastimes included Croquet or Tennis on the Lawn, HighTea with friends and neighbors, and cultivating fabulous English gardens. These continue to be the traditions in our city. In these photographs, the O'Reilly family has captured their favored pastimes as forms of cultural expression for us to enjoy.

Each module in " Point Ellice - The O'Reilly Family Photographs " invites you to explore a different angle on Victorian photographic pastimes. Together they are part of a larger Virtual Exhibition on the ongoing transmission of social values across generations. This Exhibition plays a role in telling the history of Victorian social activites. In this Virtual Exhibition photo tinting, a database related contact sheet, a reproduced Victorian album, and an essay on Amateur Photography come together to share research and ideas.
