The Canadian Museum of Civilization

Museum of Civilization

The Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) is located in Hull, Quebec, on the banks of the Ottawa River, directly opposite Parliament Hill. The design architect was Douglas Cardinal.
The architectural forms appear moulded more by natural forces than by human hand–this is distinctive of Cardinal's design style.

At the core of the Museum lie its collections of objects of historical or cultural significance, which help define the national heritage.
Collecting undertaken by the Canadian Centre for Folk Culture Studies documents folklife and the multicultural makeup of Canadian society (with the exception of Canada's First Peoples). The collection comprises about 23,000 artifacts, many of which lie in the area of folk arts.

Living Traditions — Ukrainian Church

Ukrainian Church

Between 1870 and 1930, peoples from Eastern Europe streamed into the Prairie region. Eventually, over 200,000 Ukrainians settled in the area, and the distinctive pear-shaped domes of their churches ascended into the Prairie skyline across the West. While highlighting the growth of the Ukrainian community, the churches also became visible symbols of the multicultural mosaic that came to typify the region. St. Onuphrius Ukrainian Church was moved from Smoky Lake, Alberta to the Museum, where it has been reassembled, complete with all of its ritual objects, its decor and its furnishings.
