  Kuchma
State visit of the President of Ukraine in Canada, October 1994
Planting Tree
The planting of trees on the grounds of government house has its origins in 1906 and is reserved for Royalty other Heads of State visiting Canada, or to mark significant or historic occasions. President Kuchma was only the 74th person to plant a tree in such a ceremony, and was preceded by such dignitaries as President Kennedy and her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll.
While President Kuchma's first choice was to plant a chestnut tree similar to those that grace Kyiv and whose blossoms envelope the Ukrainian capital in the springtime. A chestnut could not be planted at that time, so an Ohio Buckeye was substituted.
