National Archive of Canada

!image is coming!
The National Archives of Canada is one of the oldest federal government departments. The first Archivist was appointed in 1872 and in 1873 a Keeper of Records was appointed. During the early years, the work of the National Archives was primarily engaged in preserving the official and historical records of the federal government, that is , the political history of Canada. Copying programs were initiated in France and England in an attempt to acquire colonial records relating to the early history of Canada.

In the 1950s and 1960s the growth in the Canadian multicultural populationand the increasing interest in Canadian social and immigration history led the National Archives in 1972 to establish the Ethnic Archives Program. The National Archives began to acquire and preserve records of national significance relating to Canada's ethnocultural communities including the Ukrainian Canadian community.

Information of particular interest to researchers in Ukrainian Canadian history can be found among the holdings of various divisions of the National Archives. Perhaps the largest archival holdings are held by the Manuscript Division. There are over fifty fonds relating to Ukrainian Canadians and among these holdings are the papers of the Plast – Ukrainian Youth Association (MG29 V 107).
