The northern Plains were inhabited by several Algonquian- and Athapaskan-speaking nations:
Blackfoot, Plains Cree, Plains Saulteaux, Assiniboine and Sarcee. The central Plains were
occupied mainly by Siouan- and Caddoan-speaking nations: Sioux (Lakota, Nakota, Dakota),
Crow, Cheyenne, Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara. And the southern Plains were home to the
Comanche, the Kiowa, the Apache, the Pawnee and the Wichita, who belonged to different
linguistic groups (Uto-Aztecan, Kiowa, Caddo and Athapaskan).
