THE BEGINNINGS

Prince George has not always looked the way it does today. Once Prince George was covered by water, home to aquatic dinosaurs, such as the Mosasaur. Dry land appeared in central British Columbia 60 to 70 million years ago, during the Tertiary Era, and land dinosaurs roamed this area. As a result of a gradual lowering of temperatures and an accumulation of snow, the Ice Age resulted in ice two kilometres thick. After the glaciers receded 10,000 years ago, a river, which was to become the Fraser, drained central British Columbia. The Fraser River with the help of its tributary, the Nechako, acted to wash out the valley and created the land surface for what today is the Fraser-Fort George Region.
