Glossary

Baille
Tub which serves on fishing vessels to hold coiled hooked lines.

Boette
Bait - herring, capelin, squid or whelk.

Bulot
Whelk, Atlantic Mollusk, gastropod used as bait for the Grand Banks cod fishery.

Cabestan
Capstan - winch with a vertical axis which serves on vessels to manoeuver the anchor and on land to raise cargo or to move dorys to shelter from the sea.

Cageots
Building of a coastal fishing settlement in which was warehoused dried cod.

Capelan
Capelin- small fish of the gadidae, relative of the cod who every spring throw themselves by the millions on the coasts of Newfoundland and the islands of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.

Decollage
Operation consisting of cutting off the head of the cod.

Decolleur
One to whom is entrusted the operation of decollage.

Défiler le golfe
Action of fishing vessel which leaves the fishing grounds and lands on the west coast of Newfoundland to prepare its fish.

Doris
Dory - small light flat bottomed boat used in the codfishery

Ébrayer
Action of opening and emptying the cod of vital organs - gutting.

Échafaud
An installation of fishing settlements consisting of a loading platform used in working with cod.

Élonger les tentis
Action of leaving the main vessel in a dory to let out fishing lines.

Squid

Énocter
Action of cleaning the cod to remove all traces of blood, an operation indispensable to good preservation.

Énocteur
Person in charge of énocter the cod.

Fossières
Barrel for holding cod livers for the extraction of oil.

French Shore

Coast of Newfoundland where French fishermen traditionally held exclusive fishing rights.

Grave
Beach on which cod drying was practised.

Gravier
A person employed in the drying of cod.

Habiller la morue
All the steps necessary to prepare cod for salting.

Manne
Willow basket used to coil bait lines.

Morue verte
Green cod - Cod submitted only to salting and not dried before reaching port.

Mouiller
To throw out the anchor.

Novice
Apprentice sailor age 16 to 18.

Petit Nord
Term used by fishermen especially those of Saint-Malo to designate the Great Northern Peninsula and the Baie Verte Peninsula where they had exclusive fishing rights.

Poudrin
A powdery snow which gets in everywhere

Prélart
A type of oil cloth - large sail cloth rendered water proof by many coats of paint or tar.

Raquette
The backbone of the cod - "Soundbone".

Senne
Seine - a floating net, rectangular which forms a vertical barrier in which the fish are enclosed by drawing together the two extremities. The seine is then pulled aboard or on to the shore.

Soleil
Sun - a term which refers to each day during which the cod is exposed to the sun and wind to be dried.

Trancher
To slice - action of removing the backbone of the cod before flattening it and preparing it for salt - "splitting".

Trancheur
Splitter - person who splits the cod, generally a very experience person because this is a skilled operation.

Vigneau
A horizontal wooden trellis for drying cod.

Wary
