The Regina Riot

Frustrated with unemployment in Western
Canada caused by the Great Depression,
1,300 men climbed aboard East bound trains
in Vancouver on June 3rd and 4th, 1935.
These men were "riding the rails on to Ottawa"
in demand of work from the Federal
Government.

By the time the trekkers were stopped in
Regina by order of the Prime Minister their
numbers had increased to 1,800. Their protest
ended in violently on July 1, 1935 with the
eruption of the "Regina Riot".

One police officer was killed during the three
hours of fighting that ensued, in all over 80
people, trekkers, bystanders, police and RCMP
officers were injured.
