The Boyd Family

Description

The Boyd family consisted of: John Boyd married to Janet Fleming

Their children up to 1890 reported in the ledgers(in scrambled order):
Agnes Maude EllenWilliam HenryAlice Jane
Ida GraceMary AnnJohn Charles
Henry ThomasAlbert Edward

Find out all that you can about them (for example their birthdays or any reported events) and write a brief report. You will need to search each of the available ledgers for each member of the family. As a group or class project you might break up the work so that each group studies one child and the full class assembles a display or alternatively individuals in the group are responsible for one child and the group then assembles the full report. Use the photographs throughout the site to help with your report or display.

You will find mention of the children in the "Item" field where quite often they are paid an amount of money for the work they have done. Sometimes we are told what the work is but if you look at the detailed version of any entry you will see that the "Type" field is "CR" or a credit to the children, in other words they have been paid their wages.

Keep in mind that we have listed above the children's "formal" names, you may need to search with alternatives and short forms in order to find the children.

Learning Outcomes

  • locate and record information from a variety of sources (Grd. 4)
  • research information using print, non-print and electronic sources (Grd. 6)
  • construct, interpret and use graphs, tables, grids, scales, legends, contours and various types of maps (Grd. 10)

Grade Level

This is probably best suited for intermediate students and is a good introduction to using the search engine. Students will need to enter the name of each of the children (and variations) in the "Item" field and then collect up the information found. One of the key skills to emphasize will be the "recording" of the information so that they can then analyze and think about what they are finding out.

It would still be appropriate at the grade 10 level as an introduction to the ledger searches, but the emphasis might be on a more specific topic like how much did each child earn in given time period and how did it vary with their ages and over time.
