Discussion

Throughout these sample lesson ideas we will be providing a range of projects for working with the information in the ledgers. Though it might not always be pointed out it should be understood that any of these projects can be adapted to either individual, small group or whole class strategies.

One of the better research strategies is an adaptation of the basic jigsaw grouping activity. Take any of the topics:

  • divide it up logically between members of a group
  • have each group member do their research
  • then have the group as a whole create a final demonstration or product.
Along the same line a larger project might have different groups covering different parts of the research topic, creating their portion of the final project and then have the whole class work together to develop the complete analysis.

We would like to emphasize that this material provides students with the opportunity to work with original, source documents that they would not normally be allowed to access. Hundreds of investigations are possible in just the material that we have currently digitized and as we develop more ledgers the scope and ability to analyze ideas and trends will become greater. Please feel free to adapt and work with this material as makes sense in your classroom. Equally, if you have a successful project please email and share with us your experience and we will then add it to our teacher's guide.
