Working at the road house

Description

Using John Yates or Angus McPhail who were long term employees for John Boyd see if you can determine if they were "getting ahead" in their jobs. Track the men for a full month where you can see what wage they have been paid for a month and then what they have spent. Look at a pattern over several months or potentially with a gap of 10 or 20 years. Was Angus saving more money in the 1870s or in the 1880s? Would he be able to retire in comfort to Florida? You might also move the investigation into a bit more detail about the person's "life style" and how they spent their money.

Grade Level

For the intermediate students it is probably adequate to get a good idea of what the person purchased, how much they were paid and if they were "getting ahead". This is again a relatively simple search, using the person's last name BUT you will be getting a fair amount search results. Since students really only need to look at a one month span they should experiment with how many records are to be returned at once and choose a number around 20 that will show the records for a month.

It will be fairly easy to see the "daily life" of these men since they are one of the most frequent users of the store's commodities and they have to pay for everything. So, for example, how many pairs of socks does Angus McPhail buy in a year? What does that indicate about working conditions or does it provide any information at all.

With upper intermediate or grade 10s you may want to get into a "human resources" discussion and focus. Just how much does Angus drink, is that reasonable? If you can get a computer calendar that allows you to change the years back into the 1800s get a look at when during the week Angus drinks. Is he likely impaired on the job at any given time? Does such a workman have a quality life. (It should be pointed out that Angus remained John Boyd's "foreman" for many decades and was obviously quite reliable).
