1994 Say It Right [top]
  • Designed and produced booklet on UN Convention the Rights of the Child, for the Canadian Coalition for the Rights of Children, to help Canadian youth understand international conventions and issues.

1995 G 7 Summit (Halifax, Canada) [top]

  • First fully accredited youth journalists from The Students Commission and Auburn Air report from inside the G 7 Media Centre. Involved international collaboration and process building.

1994-96 Canadian Youth Speak International [top]

  • Students Commission was one of the key organizers to develop a national mechanism to propel Canadian youth into the international forums of the United Nations (specifically for the 1994 Social [International] Summit in Copenhagen, the 1995 Fourth World's Women's Conference in Beijing and 1996 Habitat 2 in Istanbul)

1995 UN50 Conference (Toronto, Canada) [top]

  • Representative of The Students Commission selected as one of 60 participants from 48 countries for a CIDA sponsored workshop in preparation for the Fourth World UN Conference on Women in Beijing. Time was spent with Secretary General Gertrude Mongella, revising the "Platform For Action" from the second Beijing PrepCom to include a youth perspective. Involved international collaboration and process-building.

 

1995(-2000) UN Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing, China) [top]

  • Sent 2 young women, as the only youth organization in Canada accredited to attend the government sessions.
  • Instrumental in creating the International NGO Youth Forum at the Beijing Conference, and developing the Youth Declaration.
  • Worked with 150 young women from 10 countries to create "Challenge the Assumptions", a multimedia educational package on systemic issues facing young women.
  • Youth representation on Canadian Women's NGO's coordinating follow up to Beijing.
  • Involved international collaboration and process-building.

1996 World Conservation Congress (Montréal, Canada) [top]

  • Developed and implemented Canadian youth participation in the IUCN conference. 25 youth participated in our Youth Communications Centre, which designed and produced a daily newsletter for over 3,000 adult delegates, working with 5 international adult journalists. Youth representatives opened the conference with the Canadian Prime Minister.

1996 Rescue Mission Planet Earth Web Site [top]

  • Designed, produced and published website to supplement the publication of the Canadian print version of Agenda 21

1996 & 1997 UNICEF Canada Newsletter [top]

  • Designed UNICEF newsletter for Canadian schools to increase awareness of international issues.

1997 APEC Ministerial Meetings and Leaders Summit (Canada) [top]

  • Developed, managed and executed the Canadian Youth Initiative during Canada's year of the Asia Pacific as a mechanism to involve youth critically in APEC issues. This initiative included the mobilization, engagement and execution of youth participation both Canadian and international at each of the Ministerial Meetings and the Leaders Summit in Vancouver, as well as the world's first live/virtual, local national international conference involving approx. 600 youth from Canada and other APEC economies.
  • Worked with HRDC and facilitated youth from the 18 APEC economies in forming a working group to create an electronic source book.
  • Hosted youth from Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam at several regional conferences and in a Toronto program to create a website.
  • Involved international collaboration and process building.

1997 UNESCO International Conference on Environment and Society (Greece) [top]

1997 UN Special Assembly: Rio+5 (New York)

1997 Montréal Protocol (Montréal, Canada)

  • Developed innovative Youth Communications Centre as a relevant way for youth to meaningfully participate in adult-centred international forums. Involved international collaboration and process-building.

1998 Child Labour Curriculum Project [top]

  • Part of a team that developed a 6 unit curriculum resource on Child Labour for high school teachers. Initiated and facilitated workshops at the Lester B. Pearson International Youth Leadership Seminar and in various high schools using the resource.

1998 Pacific Port Legacy Project [top]

  • As a legacy arising from the recommendations from youth involved in the 1997 APEC events, The Students Commission and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada developed a pilot project connecting youth from Canada, China and Japan in a virtual exchange program using Internet web and conferencing systems.

1999 Youth Rights Web Site [top]

  • Designed and produced a web site for educators to facilitate the introduction of international children's rights into Canadian schools, using materials developed by UNICEF Canada.

1999 Women Action 2000 [top]

  • Representative of The Students Commission selected to represent Canadian women's NGO's in an international workshop in Korea to strategize a global effort on Women and Media for UN Beijing+5 Review. Advising on the development of a global web site in this area. Involved international collaboration and process building.

2000 UN Commission on the Status of Women (New York, USA) [top]

  • Representative of The Students Commission was the Canadian youth representative on the Canadian NGO delegation to the Commission on the Status of Women serving as the final preparatory meeting for the Beijing+5 Special Session. Helped organize youth into an effective youth caucus that respected diversity, and worked to advance Canadian positions on the girl child, media and ICTs, and education.

2000 World Conference on Racism Organizing [top]

  • Involved in organizing a youth component to the 2001 World Conference on Racism, hosted by the UN Human Rights Commission in South Africa. Inputting into process to engage women generally, and young women of colour specifically in the conference process. Involved international collaboration and process building.

2000 Model OAS (Edmonton, Canada) [top]

  • Representative of The Students Commission selected as observer for the Model OAS conference, March 27 to 31, 2000. Sat in on the Informal Plenary Session for the Forum of Young Political Leaders and committee sessions where resolutions were debated and passed.

2000 OAS Women's Minister Meeting (Washington, DC) [top]

  • Representative of The Students Commission chosen as the NGO youth representative on the Canadian delegation to the Meeting of Ministers or Highest Ranking Authorities Responsible for the Advancement of Women in the Member States of the OAS. Participated in daily meetings and briefings of the Canadian delegation, attended Meeting of Ministers, brought a youth and NGO perspective to discussions about gender in an international context, disseminated information to youth and NGO networks following the meeting. Involved international collaboration and process-building.

2000 Latin American Internship (El Salvador) [top]

  • Youth staff person from The Students Commission in Latin America organizing a group of volunteers doing international community development work. Involved international collaboration and process building.

2000 War Affected Child Project and Forum [top]

  • Developing a national youth forum that engages youth on issues of war affected children and a process to work with other Canadian NGOs to select diverse young people for the program
  • Co-developing Generation Peace, a national program to engage Canadian youth in issues of human rights, conflict and war affected children. Creating educational resources to support youth understanding these international issues and developing their own projects at the local, national and international levels.
