We Believe That

 TEAM 1

Smiling can make a big difference. It transcends all languages and breaks barriers. Smiling has the capacity to change a person's perceptions and feelings.

  • We recommend that people should make the effort to smile, even to strangers, because you never know what kind of positive influence it may have.

TEAM 2

The public needs to be educated on child poverty.

  • We recommend that there be education to the public through websites, workshops/conferences, ads, and schools. Also, that youth can evaluate their own social workers.

TEAM 3

All children and youth should live in an environment that is free from harm. Every child should feel secure and safe not only in their homes but also in their neighbourhoods and communities.

  • We recommend that all federal and provincial governments make child abuse of all types (physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, spiritual) illegal and punishable under the law - zero tolerance; we, as motivated groups of young people, should lobby the government to adopt this zero tolerance of child abuse. Communities should partner with all levels of youth in order to provide all children and youth with access to basic education and basic amenities that are needed for a healthy lifestyle and to enable the child or youth to feel secure.
  • We recommend the following action plans: write letters to mayors, premiers, judges, the Prime Minister, MLA's, leaders, priests and pastors, MP's; make petitions; use multimedia tools to create awareness; send faxes and e-mails.

TEAM 4

Youth should help youth work with or in the community. People with life experiences should work with the kids. People should be seen as individuals, not as numbers.

  • We recommend that youth raise money in their own communities through local businesses and fundraising for the well being and education required for youth to be successful. This can be done by fundraising at local businesses such as Sears, Zellers, Canadian Tire, etc., and organizing car washes, bake sales, and garage/rummage sales.

TEAM 5

Children have a right to have a voice, to speak their minds, to get help, to be empowered, to dream, and to succeed.

  • We recommend that youth put their faith in adults and that adults put their faith in youth.

TEAM 6

We must invest in today's youth for a better tomorrow. We should put our knowledge about child poverty to use. Youth should have a huge voice and participate actively in the community.

  • We recommend that there be more conferences, demonstrations, and youth organizations that will combat the issue of child poverty.

TEAM 7

Youth need to change the system by having their voices heard. They need to inform the population of the issues from their perspective and to propose solutions to these issues. Only when we have input from youth can we work together, as a country, to contribute to the demise of child poverty. Youth need to involve youth of diverse backgrounds (privileged and underprivileged), as these youth are our country's future doctors, plumbers, computer programmers, politicians, and much more. It is our life and we can make it better.

  • We recommend that we go back to our communities and organize groups of youth leaders within high schools and junior high schools to start a reading program with elementary children. This will promote interaction and common goals between youth of different ages and backgrounds. It is youth helping youth. In so doing, we are raising awareness of child poverty issues among youth as well as developing leadership skills.

TEAM 8

As youth, we are experiencing the problems in the social support system, so we are the ones who know how to change it, and should therefore be included in the process of change.

  • We recommend that we, the youth, communicate with people around us, with other organizations and with people of higher power that, "We, the youth, are going through the system and should be involved in changing it."

TEAM 9

All children should have the opportunity to be both respected and heard.

  • We recommend that youth get involved in order to make their ideas heard.

TEAM 10

Youth are the future of our world, and are the next generation of adults; therefore they are best equipped to initiate change today.

  • We recommend that mentorship, equality, and youth leadership be incorporated into school curriculum in the future.

TEAM 11

Tomorrow must depend on today in order to overcome the past.

  • We recommend that trust, communication, effort and cooperation should be our first steps toward achieving our belief.

TEAM 12 (Adult Team)

Youth are not being heard. They have a lot to offer and we believe there can be a change. Youth are being left behind. We must become advocates for youth and force our peers and co-workers and community leaders to not just listen to young voices but to hear them. We are together responsible for affecting change, no matter who we are, where we've come from, or where we are going.

  • We recommend that youth are taught and encouraged to practise the skills necessary to be independent, healthy, spiritual, progressive and understanding adults. We all have to go out and do it, and not wait for the government. We need to use our passion to be proactive not reactive; talk to our friends, families, neighbours, teachers, students, co-workers, social workers, government leaders, everyone, and enlist their help and support. We must be true to these beliefs and always defend them.

Children Need
TEAM 1

Children need community support.

  • We recommend that children be given the chance to develop their talents without being restricted by financial costs.

TEAM 2

Children need to be able to choose whether or not they receive help for their problems. They cannot be forced to deal with things they are not prepared to deal with. We believe that youth need access to other youth experiences relevant to their situation. We think that this tool is the most effective resource available for dealing with their problems.

  • We recommend that the Internet have stories about similar youth experiences and help from other youth with those experiences. The Internet is effective for people who don't want to be judged, such as shy people, because it is an anonymous environment. The Internet can be a network for youth outreach services.

TEAM 3

Children need good health, love and respect.

  • We recommend that we will help provide all children and youth with a facility which will be designed to serve the specific needs of the community. We will do this by:

1) Organizing a dance or gig to help fundraise money for the facility and the community.

2) Making donation cans and place them in local convenience stores to help raise funds.

3) Making a video to show struggles in everyday life that happen in the community.

4) Making posters and placing them in bathrooms, on light poles and walls, in schools, on billboards, etc.

TEAM 4

Children need love.

  • We recommend parenting courses in the community centers and in the schools. It will include topics like diversity, hands-on experience, and ways and examples of how the parent can express his/her feelings and emotions towards their children. We also suggest that parents and grandparents act as mentors and teach the course.

TEAM 5

Children need food, shelter, love, encouragement, guidance, involvement, understanding, and a means of self-expression. Children cannot live without support, recognition, motivation, care, trust, and respect.

  • We recommend that all of the above-mentioned values must be understood and met in order for children to live exceptional lives.

TEAM 6

Children need: all kinds of love; stability and security; a good education; to express themselves so that they may be heard; to be surrounded by role models; mostly to have a healthy family.

  • We recommend that through general and public education (awareness) we can help children meet these needs. So, each youth must return to his/her community and talk about this issue.

TEAM 7

Children need a strong educational net that will provide a healthy environment where they can learn academically, spiritually, emotionally and socially.

  • We recommend that each of us commit to discussing the importance of education with the youth of our communities.

TEAM 8

Children need love, encouragement, and the right to live in a safe, caring, supportive environment.

  • We recommend that the government provide education programs, social services and financial assistance to those in need.

TEAM 9

Children Need Love.

  • In order for children to feel loved, they need to physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually experience it. Parents, teachers and peers need to encourage and treat children with respect. It's important to instill good values at a young age. We believe that by putting these plans into action, our future generations will possess the skills to ensure an existence without poverty.

TEAM 10

Children need freedom from the oppression of poverty.

  • We recommend that they be taught that they are respected so they can respect others. Therefore they will have confidence and be self-assured so that they may succeed in life.

TEAM 11

Children need physical, emotional, mental and spiritual support from the community to achieve goals and self-worth.

  • Everyone needs to encourage and to take initiative in order to take the first step toward meeting the needs of children.

TEAM 12 (Adult Team)

Children need to be heard.

Nu ka is tewoka pokaksi (Blackfoot).

  • We recommend a course of action to increase awareness and educate all regarding the importance of utilizing effective listening strategies and techniques.

TEAM 13

Children need people to stop just talking.

  • We recommend that we have to act instead of talking.
