Today our community is primarily an urban one as mainstream society edges physically closer to the everyday life of our nation. This battle between technological advancement and Snuneymuxw' efforts to regain lost traditions poses an even greater challenge that must be met in order for the Snuneymuxw people to move into the twenty-first century as a proud and strong people. Today, the traditional cultural icons have taken on a pseudo-like significance. That is, although the arts and crafts of today deeply reflect our past, they are no longer revered but rather are viewed as a hobby, a small business or a leisure pastime.
The above photo of Departure Bay was taken from what was once part of Snuneymuxw traditional territory. Today, the beach serves as a City of Nanaimo recreation area. The bay is a major point of departure for the B.C. Ferry Corporation's ferry to Vancouver. Once a Snuneymuxw winter village, this region is part of the treaty package currently under negotiation with the provincial and federal governments.
