The Provincial and Federal governments have indicated that they would like us to begin selecting land for settlement so we can begin the next negotiating phase.

Here are examples of our initial land selections:

Federal Crown Land, such as the Department of National Defense (DND) lands which includes Camp Nanaimo and the Rifle Range. Federal Crown Land also includes one of our fishing camps. The Biological Station is situated on this site in Departure Bay.

Provincial Lands being selected are Provincial Forestry Lands including the provincial timber forest license lands on Gabriola Island, near Nanaimo Lakes and Mt. Benson. Other Provincial Crown Land we have selected includes Nanaimo River estuary, Linden Valley and Holden Lake. Also to be selected are some Private Managed Forest Lands within our core Traditional Territory.

Other lands selected are Petroglyph Park, where many of our legends and oral history originate. Duke Point is a location of many of our burial sites and resource sites. Newcastle Island is also a burial and resource site which is part of our selection. Neck Point and Piper's Lagoon are important resource camps and are locations where we fished for herring, bluebacks and hunted for deer and black ducks.

It is the vision of our people that these lands will form a legacy for our children.
