Douglas Treaty

Snuneymuxw First Nation's traditional territory used to encompass 98,000 hectares of land that extended along the coastline of Vancouver Island. The land stretched from several kilometers north of Neck Point to Yellow Point Harbour in the south, Gabriola Island and other adjacent islands to the east, and the furthermost western reaches of the Nanaimo River watershed. In addition to this exclusive territory we shared another 100,000 hectares with neighboring First Nations' people, the Nanoose, Chemainus and Cowichan people. In addition, seasonal fishing village sites in Qualicum, Chemainus and on the Fraser River in the lower mainland were also Snuneymuxw traditional sites.

Below is a painting of a Snuneymuxw village.
