Most travel was by canoe. The Coast Salish canoe was the most seaworthy type and was especially used by the Snuneymuxw people for fishing and hunting. These canoes could be more than 40 feet in length and could hold 20 to 30 people. During the fishing season, the Snuneymuxw people traveled by canoe to fishing camps. In April, they traveled to Gabriola Island where Twin Beaches and Berry Point were the most productive sites to fish for cod, salmon and other fish. In May, families moved to other fishing camps in the region such as False Narrows, Dodd Narrows, Mudge Island, Stuart Channel and Gabriola Pass. In July, the majority of people traveled across the Strait of Georgia to the Fraser River for summer fishing. In the winter, Snuneymuxw people traveled by foot to Departure Bay to hunt elk and deer. Smaller animals such as raccoons, mink, martens and beaver were trapped for their fur.
