Garnet Street:

Garnet Street is named after Sir Garnet Wolseley, commander of an expedition of British regulars and Canadian militia sent to put down the Red River Rebellion of 1870.

Sir Garnet Wolseley was a career soldier. He had seen action in the Burmese War from 1852 to 1853, as well in the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. While fighting in Egypt Sir Wolseley enlisted the aid of Canadian voyageurs. These voyageurs had proved indispensable during the Red River Rebellion and later they helped Wolseley and his forces navigate the treacherous waters of the Egyptian Nile River.
