Haultain
Crescent:
This crescent honours the memory
of Sir Frederick William Gordon Haultain. In 1937 Sir
Haultain was fortunate enough to celebrate four anniversaries
within a few days of each other. These were his 80th birthday, the 50th
Anniversary of his election to the North West Territories Council, his
30th year as a member of the University of Saskatchewan Senate and his
25th anniversary as Saskatchewan’s Chief Justice.
Sir Haultain
began his law practice in 1884 at Fort Macleod, Alberta. He was first
elected to the Territorial Government in 1887 and he served as Premier
of the North West Territories from 1887 to 1905.
Following Sir Haultain’s
death in 1942 the former Lieutenant Governor Archie McNab gave the following
tribute:
“…for more than
50 years he gave single and selfless service to this Western land. His
was the hand that piloted the country through its adolescent and formative
years… he was not only a great public figure, but a man of delightful
and lovable personality. His memory will be kept green as long as the
records of this great province endure.” |
