Porteous Street:

The Honourable George Porteous was appointed Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor in 1976. He later died in office in 1978.

George Porteous worked for the YMCA in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in Victoria, British Columbia and in Brantford, Ontario. During the Second World War he served in the Pacific theater with the YMCA Auxiliary Service. He also spent part of this time, 46 months, as a Japanese prisoner of war after the fall of Hong Kong in 1941. On his return to Canada George Porteous became Director of the Saskatoon Community Chest. In 1974 he was awarded the Order of Canada for his dedication to community affairs.
