St.
John (Market Slip at Low Water)
Market
Slip, at the foot of King Street, is the principal business
thoroughfare of St. John. This is the identical spot
where landed the American Loyalists in 1783, the founders
of the city. The tides in the harbour rise to the extraordinary
height of twenty-two to twenty-six feet. At low tide
the vessels in the Slip are left supported by the muddy
bottom, with decks from ten to fifteen feet below the
level of the wharves.
