Introduction

In 1985, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador established the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador as a non-profit organisation to stimulate an understanding and appreciation of Newfoundland's architectural heritage. The foundation is the only organisation in the province established exclusively to preserve and promote the province's built heritage. In support of its mandate, it acts as a resource for local groups and individuals interested in preserving buildings of architectural, cultural and/or historical significance to the province. Based upon applications from various groups and individuals each year, the Foundation designates significant buildings as " Registered Heritage Structures." In addition, grants are often issued by the foundation to assist in the preservation and/or restoration of the structures. The designations and grants are often conditional, based upon criteria intended to ensure that the original architectural integrity of the structures is maintained as much as possible.

This site contains descriptions and brief histories of nearly 200 Registered Heritage Structures with images for as many of the structures as were available. The site is organised into alphabetical listings of communities, towns and cities, within which are listed the Heritage Structures in those locations. For some places with numerous heritage structures, walking tours have been developed. For each tour a town map is shown with numbers marking the location of the various buildings.

This site is the result of a partnership between the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, Memorial University of Newfoundland's “Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Web Project,” and Industry Canada's Schoolnet Digital Collections program.

Please note: Some photographs may depict structures prior to restoration.
