Photodigitization

The digitization of VPL's Special Collections historical photographs began in June 2000 with the Leonard Frank Photodigitization Project. InMagic® DB/TextWorks® and Web Publisher software have been used to facilitate searching and displaying the scanned photographic records on the world wide web. Creation of a unique, new, digital photograph collection will serve to:

  • protect the collection because it will be available electronically thereby reducing the handling of original images
  • represent the collection by raising researchers' awareness of the historical photograph collection and by heightening awareness of the significance and value of the collection to the wider community.

The Leonard Frank Photograph Collection
Frank's collection is the first large collection acquired by Vancouver Public Library and provides the foundation upon which today's Vancouver Public Library Historic Photograph Collection is built. Frank was active as a photographer between 1910 — 1944. He travelled throughout British Columbia during this period taking photographs of a vast array of subjects thereby providing a detailed record of life in the province. Frank was particularly interested in photographing city scenes: buildings, bridges and waterfront, although he had a passion for nature and took spectacular photographs of mountains and life in the woods. Industrial images of British Columbia will be added as the project continues.
