Leader of the Government in the House of Commons
and Minister for Democratic Reform announces composition of Ad Hoc
Committee to Review a Nominee for the Supreme Court of Canada
Ottawa – The Honourable Robert Nicholson, Leader of the Government
in the House of Commons and Minister for Democratic Reform, today announced the composition of the Ad Hoc Committee
to Review a Nominee for the Supreme Court of Canada.
“This committee, as announced by the Prime Minister on February 20th,
represents an unprecedented step towards more openness and accountability in the
process of appointing people to the Supreme Court”, said Minister Nicholson.
The ad hoc committee, established as part of the process to fill the vacancy
left on the Supreme Court by the retirement of John Major in December 2005, will
be composed of 12 parliamentarians. Representation on the committee is
consistent with party standing in the House of Commons.
The committee will be chaired by the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of
Justice.
Minister Nicholson thanked the opposition House Leaders for their cooperation
in the establishment of the committee.
The committee meeting will take place on Monday, February 27th beginning at
1:00 p.m.
Names of the committee members are contained in the attached backgrounder.
