Statement by the Prime Minister
on the resignation of Brian Tobin

January 8, 1996
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Jean Chrétien issued this statement today following Brian Tobin's announcement that he will leave federal politics to seek the offices of Leader of the Newfoundland Liberal Party and Premier of Newfoundland:

"I wish Brian Tobin all the best as he seeks out this new challenge. And I look forward to working with him in a new capacity in the future.

Of course we will miss him in Ottawa. But the experience he has gained at the federal level along with the great respect he has earned across Canada for his courageous stand during the Turbot War and his proud championing of national unity would serve him in good stead as Premier of Newfoundland. He would bring to these new responsibilities a national outlook and an understanding of the country as a whole, that would be valuable to the people of Newfoundland and to all of Canada.

I know I speak for all Canadians when I wish Brian Tobin well and I look forward to his continuing to play an important role on the national scene."
