SENIOR RESEARCH FELLOW, OCEANS, NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL

Canada's three oceans and related coastal and marine resources are an increasingly important part of our economic and social fabric. Their protection, use and development in a sustainable fashion for future generations are key challenges to be met. Canada is a world leader in the research and development (R&D) needed to meet these challenges, and the National Research Council is a major player in helping Canada realise its potential.

In his new position, Dr. Harrison will be responsible for reviewing and reporting on Canada's ocean and coastal zone research and development capacity. He will also be responsible for promoting the rapid and effective implementation of Canada's "Oceans Strategy", for positioning Canada's world role as a leader in sustainable ocean development (particularly within the G-8 context), and for promoting the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Dr. Harrison will work closely with government departments and agencies, aboriginal interests, academic institutions, current and future research networks and centres of excellence, international agencies and foreign governments. He will draw on his extensive experience in ocean and coastal zone affairs as Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, as well as his longstanding academic and research reputation in the field.
