Statement by the Prime Minister on the death of Private Braun Scott Woodfield

November 24, 2005
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Paul Martin today made the following statement:

“On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I would like to express heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Private Braun Scott Woodfield, the Canadian Forces’ soldier who lost his life today in a tragic incident in the province of Kandahar, Afghanistan. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. We also wish those soldiers who were injured a speedy recovery.

Today is a sombre day and I was deeply saddened to learn of this terrible loss, which is not only a loss to The Royal Canadian Regiment in Gagetown, New Brunswick, the Army, and the Canadian Forces, but also to all Canadians. The skill, professionalism, determination and courage of these five soldiers exemplify Canadian values and gives us all reason to be proud despite the tragedy which occurred today. Private Braun Scott Woodfield will be dearly missed

Consistent with Canadian values, the men and women of the Canadian Forces are in Afghanistan to help bring peace, stability, hope and opportunity to the Afghan people. This mission involves significant risks but the members of the Canadian Forces have the leadership, training, equipment and support they need to succeed.

Canadians stand proudly with them as they continue this mission which is significant, steadfast and key to protecting Canada and Canadians from the global threats of terrorism.”
