Statement by the Prime Minister on the Death of Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates

January 04, 2006
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Paul Martin today issued the following statement on the passing of Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE):

"It was with great sadness that I learned of the sudden passing of Prime Minister Maktoum. On behalf of all Canadians, I extend our deepest condolences to his family, to the governments of the UAE and Dubai, and to the people of the United Arab Emirates.

"During the 15-year reign of Sheikh Maktoum, the UAE experienced a remarkable period of increased prosperity and development. We have seen Dubai transformed into a world-class trade, transportation and tourism centre.

"Canada views the UAE as an important regional partner. The UAE is a major Canadian export destination and stands as a regional model among oil-producing countries for its diversified economic growth. Canada and the UAE also share common interests with respect to regional security and counterterrorism."
