Federal Government Applauds Manitoba's Efforts to Build Democratic, Accountable Senate

May 22, 2008
Ottawa, Ontario

Speaker's Chair

Ottawa - Statement by Hon. Peter Van Loan, P.C., M.P.:

“The federal government applauds the efforts of the Manitoba government to build a democratic, accountable Senate. We firmly believe the Senate must change. ”

“The federal government recognizes the Manitoba proposals are consistent with the need to change. We hope their consultations take into account our proposals to modernize the Senate. ”

“The debate over the future of the Senate comes down to a simple choice: either you support change or you support the status quo. ”

“Those that support change will work to find ways of achieving that change. Those that support the status quo will seek to find ways to entrench the status quo and make change even more difficult to achieve.”

“We are pleased that Manitoba has joined the growing ranks of those seeking ways to modernize and democratize the Senate. We are willing and eager to work with our provincial partners to create a Senate consistent with 21st century democratic principles, values and traditions.”
